Climate Engineering Science Dialogue

While climate engineering as a topic has hardly been present in public discussions so far, it has been controversially discussed in science for several years, especially in the natural and engineering sciences. On the one hand, the necessity of these technologies is discussed in view of the advancing climate change; on the other hand, there are concerns about incalculable ecological, economic and social consequences. Scientific research is currently taking place mainly in the USA, the UK and Germany. In the scientific debate, there is so far only a rudimentary common, interdisciplinary perspective. Furthermore, the social sciences are not broadly involved, especially in the scientific debate in Switzerland. Yet an interdisciplinary perspective could do justice to the complexity of the ecological, economical and social consequences associated with climate engineering.

In order to anchor the topic of climate engineering more firmly in the Swiss scientific landscape and to strengthen an interdisciplinary perspective on opportunities and risks, we conducted a scientific dialogue on the topic in a series of workshops with renowned Swiss and international climate researchers and experts with the financial support of the FOEN. The aim of the dialogue was to exchange views on the state of research and the importance of the topic and to learn to better assess risks.

The result was summarised in a white paper, which is available under Downloads.
