Digital Literacy

Strengthening the digital competencies of citizens – that’s what our simulation for digital #opinion formation aims to do. For the participants of the simulation, a virtual debate is created in which they can actively experience and question the influence of misinformation, microtargeting and similar phenomena on their own opinion formation. In partnership with the canton of Zurich, a first prototype was created in the fall of 2020, which is currently being further developed according to the “train the trainer” approach for use in communities, schools and companies.
This project is a cooperation of the Risk Dialog Foundation and the think tank Dezentrum. The project is supported by the Canton of Zurich, E-Government Schweiz, the Gebert Rüf Foundation, and the Christoph Merian Foundation. With the help of these partners, we can prepare the simulation for different target groups and run it in different environments.
Who’s the target audience?
An informed and respectful culture of debate affects us all. It is an important part of our life together and plays an important role in both our working and private lives. As information gathering and opinion forming processes in most cases also take place in the digital space, the character of debate changes and so do the challenges that come with it. The Digital Literacy Simulation serves as a helpful reflection tool for different target groups:
- School classes
Are you experiencing how the information behavior of young people has changed? Students live in POPC mode (permanently online, permanently connected) and so loosely presented news clips, likes and shares of articles or unfiltered user comments develop as counterparts to well-founded news sources, or even replace them. It is therefore crucial to have strategies in place at a young age to recognize these phenomena of the digital world and to develop competencies for mastering them.
- Organizations
No company can avoid moving into the digital space. In many organizations, internal discussions are also increasingly taking place digitally. This often leads to a different culture of debate than in physical exchanges. It is therefore important to teach employees digital skills. For well-founded and respectful dialogs in the digital space, a basic understanding of the stumbling blocks and phenomena from the digital space is therefore essential.
- Events
Are you planning a congress, a series of workshops or another event and would like to offer your visitors an interactive experience while at the same time imparting digital skills? The Digital Literacy Simulation makes the challenges of digital information gathering and discussion culture directly tangible and offers an exciting basis for further exchange on the topic.
- Individuals
